At last, the crisis in Aboriginal health, where many die from preventable diseases every day, has been brought back on the agenda by the AMA. Although the Labor Party have traditionally been more interested in helping Australia’s original custodians, in this campaign, both major parties have ignored this issue to their shame. Before they both splash out on more non-core promises to those of us lucky enough to have been born into white middle class prosperity and health, I suggest they direct their attention to the Australians most in need. We need to start valuing what the Aboriginal people and culture have to offer us so that they feel valued and motivated. That will involve white Australians consulting with and working with Aboriginal people. It is time that the reconciliation debate involved more than rhetoric and it is time this urgent issue came back on the agenda.
