A champagne socialist reflects on Western culture and the Universe... and whilst gazing at his navel, he comes up with a lot of useless lint. It is the fruits of this navel-gazing that form the substance of this blog.
A Short Plea

Agent Orange in Vietnam. The unprovoked invasion of Iraq. The abuse of political prisoners. Dear US Presidents of the future, the Geneva conventions were not intended as guidelines. They are the combined wisdom of a generation who, unlike you, lived with war. You only ever have to observe from afar. Those wise men now roll in their graves.

Honestly, the whole issue of how to deal with the terrorists at Gitmo is quite a philisophical quandry for me

Hell, I got one essay in my Philosophy Book about how the guy believes the stigma of bad associated with torture is unjustified. Though the balls thing is a little extreme, I believe in sleep deprivation because it really gets them where it hurts.

As for the enemy combatants thing, I honestly think it is just a matter of time, espetially if Bush gets re-elected, that you will start seeing people who take out a few too many of the wrong books at the library (since they track that now, too) being labeled an enemy combatant.

Don't expect help from Kerry though.

Since both were in the same society and both have the same views on political issues I believe you can expect it from BOTH candidates.

As for my take on declaring everyone 'enemy combatant', if it does happen from either of them than you can expect this 'enemy combatant' to battle the real enemy.

The problem is the 'right' path and the 'left' path are both going the wrong direction plus both are controlled by the same forces and it is time for a serious change!

The Geneva Conventions ARE Guidlines!!! They are specifically written so as to allow the Post-WWII powers to continue unfettered within their own realms. The GCs and the UN were their way of securing the post-war status quo, even if they eventually declined or were eclipsed by other countries. That is why Genocide (the main impetus behind the GCs and the UN) is still so hard to define and act on (even with Rwanda and Sudan as pretty stark examples). They GCs and the UN really only seem to matter when the big boys are involved or interested.

The truth is, most of these post-modern creations are so idealistic as to be essentially useless. Did the UN keep the Soviets and the Chinese out of Korea (five years after WWII ended?), no! History proves that paper is meaningless (non-aggression pact and "peace in our time" anyone?) at the end of the day, if the other guy is stronger and does not fear retaliation he will go for the jugular. This is not to say that we should carpet bomb with nukes, but all the other ocuntries not involved in Abu Ghraib are having their citizens' heads chopped off on t.v. and online...so whose opinion are we trying to influence to have our side treated well?
