A champagne socialist reflects on Western culture and the Universe... and whilst gazing at his navel, he comes up with a lot of useless lint. It is the fruits of this navel-gazing that form the substance of this blog.
In South Australia, a young surfer called Nick Peterson was eaten by a shark a few days ago. Yesterday, his father said he does not want the shark destroyed, because the ocean is the shark's domain. Nick Peterson admired and respected sharks. Mr Peterson Snr should be commended. Do those people seeking to hunt and destroy the shark honestly believe it will make the oceans safer for us? Sharks, like us, eat meat to survive. Because of this, all sharks pose a threat to human life. It is a risk you take when you swim in the ocean. This is a fact of life faced by the ocean's creatures every day and it's time we woke up to our place in the circle of life. We are becoming increasingly obsessed by attempts to baby proof the Earth, to remove all danger, from removing seesaws from kid's playgrounds to this hysterical reaction.

Health Minister Tony Abbott made comments last week that because of Australia's economic fortitude at the moment, Australians are the happiest they've ever been. Australia has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world. We have one of the highest rates of depression in the world. Obviously, Tony Abbott's mates are probably the happiest they've ever been, but for the rest of us, money just doesn't buy happiness. That is one thing that the current Government keeps on proving, but has yet to understand. This is disturbing given that Mr Abbott is actually the HEALTH Minister. These are stats Mr Abbott should be well aware of. But I suppose it is no surprise to many of us that the man is completely out of touch with the electorate.

You have to remember Abbott the bible-basher did abandon his first-born child. Hypocrisy is hardly a new state of mind for the good minister.

That all sharks eat meat is not the issue.  Like Bengal tigers, once they have tasted Human flesh, they seem to seek it out.  Many never wil be a threat to humans, but those that have killed will surely kill again, and for people's sake, should be destroyed.

this statement would make sense if it were true. however, sharks don't like human flesh. and the only reason they attack humans is because of circumstances within their natural world that has forced them to do so. some uncontrollable situations that may involve a reduce food supply may force the shark to go further afield in order to gain sustainance.
and before you jump down my throat, i know a biologist who knows sharks. not personally , but he knows about them.

Dr. Guy, there is no evidence that sharks, once tasting human flesh will kill again (apart from very limited anecdotal claims). While the taking of a young life is tragic, I agree with Champas. The knee-jerk reaction of 'lets hunt it down and kill it' while thousands of sharks are daily being slaughtered for their fins is incredibly ridiculous. Maybe the sharks ARE communicating with each other and just trying to get their own back. You can hardly blame them.

Excuse me for this but fuck Tony Abbott. His narrow-minded, quasi-religious drivel makes me ill. I don't have children but I am married. My income wasn't high enough to get the recent increase nor is it low enough to get any benefits. In other words, what has the Howard government given me? Aside from a bad case of indigestion and the occasional desire to mimic Liberal politicians with flatulence, absolutely nothing. Fuck Abbott when he says I'm happy because of Liberal economic policies. I am happy DESPITE their policies.

I work for the health industry as a lowly administration assistant but know more than Abbot does. The sooner he is dumped, the better.

cheers,

Maso

Hooray! An edited version of my shark letter was published in Friday's Courier-Mail! Is there anyone in Adelaide who gets the Advertiser? because I sent it to them too.
