A champagne socialist reflects on Western culture and the Universe... and whilst gazing at his navel, he comes up with a lot of useless lint. It is the fruits of this navel-gazing that form the substance of this blog.

Many of you have been wondering when I was going to finally make comment on the recent Tsunami disaster. Although officially I was in bed with an incredibly bad chest cold, rumours were floating around that I had been spotted in Canberra, staying in a luxury home and playing with good friends. I believe one lady even called up Phoenixboi on his blog and suggested I was resting it up in New Caledonia. None of these vicious rumours are true. I intend to keep on as “The Champ”, despite talk of a...

I have strong political beliefs about a lot of things as you probably know. I have an opinion about refugees, drugs, diplomacy, environmental policy, immigration, abortion, social security etc. And the curious thing is that 99% of my beliefs probably fall under the category of Left wing politics. Why? It seems strange to me that anyone else combines all the beliefs I do. I see a lot of my opinions as being separate from each other. For instance, I believe in increasing immigration because...

Link For many years Right wingers have been refusing to do things like wearing big silly hats with flashing neon signs proclaiming their Right wingedness. Instead they expect us to work it out by listening to their arguments. As a result, identification for the purpose of culling has been very difficult over the years. So, as a public service here are the early warning signs that reveal if you, or someone you care about, just might be a right winger. You might be a right winger if.......

Welcome to the inaugural Moet & Chandon Champagne Socialist Blog Awards. 2004 has been a big year for blogging and for politics. Politically, champagne socialism has taken a battering, but next year will be the year comrades. Next year is the year of the revolution. Next year, the people will spontaneously rise up and claim victory. In a few moments, poverty will dissipate, racism will fade away and all people will learn to live in harmony within our communist utopia. The time is nigh comrades...

Uncle Ray Martin has been trying to get little Johnny to sing at Carols by Candlelight for years. Every year, Johnny has declined, too shy to make the transition from the Kirribilli piano to the Domain. But rumour has it that this year, Johnny has finally acquiesced and he will be the surprise guest at this year’s Carols (possibly dressed as Father Christmas, bringing gifts like delivering on non-core promises). And here at CS, I just happen to have gotten hold of the songs he will be singing...

Christmas Day is and always has been my favourite day of the year. The nation stops to take a breather. Unlike other public holidays, there are no street parades or giant picnics to attend. Unless you count that church thing I’ve heard some people do, but I don’t know what that’s all about. Christmas Day is a day to be with my family. We have nowhere we have to be, no obligations to anyone. The day starts with the present unwrapping ceremony. This usually takes several hours. Not because ...

In South Australia, a young surfer called Nick Peterson was eaten by a shark a few days ago. Yesterday, his father said he does not want the shark destroyed, because the ocean is the shark's domain. Nick Peterson admired and respected sharks. Mr Peterson Snr should be commended. Do those people seeking to hunt and destroy the shark honestly believe it will make the oceans safer for us? Sharks, like us, eat meat to survive. Because of this, all sharks pose a threat to human life. It is a risk ...

Now that the Howard Government has tended to the top priority of looking after the white people, it seems that the job of looking after the natives has finally reached the top of the pile on the to do list. John Howard's new board of "dignified" Aboriginals is a reality and they are getting down to business. After 8 years it is wonderful to see that the Howard Government has finally decided to turn some attention to Aboriginal affairs. I knew it had to happen eventually. Even if it's only bec...

Well here it is my loyal readers! I have finally reached my 69th article. I never thought I’d make it, but now that I have it’s undoubtedly time for some self-congratulation. This 69th article is a significant one because it is representative of what blogging is: I give pleasure to you through my articles, and you return it in the forums. John Howard Offers More Choice John Howard said during the election campaign that there was a difference in philosophy between Labor and Liberal ov...

Last week a letter by Bob Thomas was published in The Courier-Mail quite rightly asking where were all the Palm Island protesters (who are rioting over the alleged murder of an Aboriginal citizen by a police officer) when their women and children were being raped, bashed and murdered over the years. My response went something like this: Probably the same place us whitefellers were while our women and children suffered the same fate.....down the pub! People in glass houses, Bob!

A Liberal Party supporting acquaintance and I rode along in the car with the radio news on. It informed us of the new Government’s plans to introduce an Australia Identity Card: a new measure to combat terrorism. We both groaned “Nooooo!”. Then my friend labelled the idea: “COMMUNISM!”. My goodness! My worst fears about those reds under the beds had come true! Those sneaky pinkos had infiltrated the Liberal Party, gained power under the pretext of economic management, and begun the busine...

Mark Latham, the leader of the supposedly left-wing Labor Party, has given his synopsis of their unsucessful election campaign. According to Latham, the problem was that they weren’t the Liberal Party. And Latho is going to change that fact. At first, he acknowledged that Labor’s Tasmanian forests policy would have been good for jobs but that the Labor Party had failed to sell this aspect. Now Latho has decided to completely abandon the policy and abandon the forests. Latho’s also de...

I’d like to pay my respects to Australia’s first ever female leader of a political party, Janine Haines who died a few days ago, aged 59. Haines took over the reins from Don Chipp as Democrats leader in 1986 and proved herself to be a person of great integrity and intelligence. I don’t believe we have seen the likes of her since she left politics and I have often lamented her departure from the political arena. She gave the Democrats real guts, and this was why I was such a fervent suppor...

Last week I thought I was watching an umpire sledging one of the players for the first time ever in international cricket. Warney waddled up to bowl and there was the ump yelling out “Wide”. Then I realised he was referring to the bowl, not Warney himself. And the Fat Brat, Waddling Whinging Warney turned around to the ump and told him to consult the rule book and went on and on about it for about a day. This is the same Warnus Pornus who was only recently saying that the umpire’s naked eye w...
